Star Gazing

We will be meeting tonight for the viewing of the night sky. It is forecasted for the clouds to clear up later today. We will be out there from about 7-9:30 pm on the new Living Word Church property. Mr. Jerry Dixon said to drive around to the back left corner of the parking lot and that is where they will be set up. I hope some of you can make it!

Letters went home today to announce the star gazing night for next week. As of now, the weather should be good enough for it to take place on Friday, but I will post on the website if anything changes.

I hope those of you traveling for the break remain well and protected through the bad weather. One thing I heard recently is that holidays and extra breaks are not what we should rely on to feel refreshed, but a continuosly close relationship with Jesus should is what should sustain us all the time.

Both grades had their science tests today and did the science vocabulary. We reviewed over all of the information for 6th grade before taking the test. I began reviewing for 5th grade but some uncooperation caused us to stop halfway through. I did make sure to go over the more important parts first.

We did not learn a new math lesson in either grade today. 5th grade just reivewed bar graphs and pictographs and 6th grade practiced more with scale drawings. I made time during recess to be available to help any 6th graders with trouble in this week's math lesson. When it was recess time, they all told me that they understood and did not come in for the extra help.

Both grades had a heritage studies quiz today. We reviewed over all of the information before taking it in both classes. Since we are off for all of next week, we will not learn a new lesson tomorrow.

The science tests are tomorrow. Yesterday we reviewed over all of the information in 6th grade. 5th grade also has all the information that they need.

Some of the 6th graders seem to be having a little trouble with today's math lesson. They are having to use rulers to count measurements. Over the break, I suggest they practice memorizing what the lines on the inch side stand for (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, etc) so that it is easier for them. Please try to go over that information with them. They all need rulers in order to complete the work tomorrow and for the test after the break. The 5th graders are now working on pictographsand bar graphs. They seem to understand pretty well. We are onoly reviewing the information from this week tomorrow.

TEst folders will be going out tomorrow. PTC is having a fundraiser with Chik-Fil-A tomorrow in Houma. The students each received a paper and any one making a purchase between 5-9pm and presenting the paper will help PTC get a portion of those sales.

The math tests were today. We went over and worked all of the problems from the practice worksheets before taking it. Both grades will not be learning many lessons this week, but we will spend more time focusing on the ones that we do learn.

The students received their science study guides today. 6th grade did not get them until the end of class and have to complete it for homework. The 5th graders had time to complete it in class but have to finish for those who did not. The science tests will be Friday to give the students an extra day to learrn the material.

Heritage studies for both grades is not going to cover much information this week. The 6th graders covered two new pages in the textbook but we are not learning anything new for the 5th graders. Both grades will only have a quiz Thursday on the information from worktext pages that were completed between last week and yesterday.

The star-gazing night is being rescheduled. It looks like the Friday after Mardi Gras is the next good night (as far as the moon goes). We are still waiting on a definite answer for that night.

Friday, February 5, 2010

Tonight's star and planet gazing event is being postponed. The clouds are not clearing away so it would be very difficult to see the night sky. It will work out to have it on another day soon and hopefully it will not be as wet or cold when we reschedule. I will let you know the new date when we have it planned.

5th and 6th graders had their heritage studies tests today. After the tests, they worked on finishing their math classwork anad writing the definitions for science. The 6th graders have difficult vocabulary words this week, so their test might be switched to Friday next week. I will let the students know for sure Monday.

For both grades we just reviewed for math. They had over 90 minutes to work on their math and should have it all completed.

As of right now, we will be able to view the night sky tomorrow night. The students have known about it since last week and I put it on my website last week. The weather forecast was not looking good, but it should be clear tomorrow night. Letters are going home with the details today. It will be at the new church property from about 7pm-9:30pm

This week for the 5th graders, we are spending time reviewing past lessons. The only new lesson is on rounding to the nearest cent. There is a lot of review, so the test itself will cover a variety of different things. We are continuing with graphs for the 6th graders. This week is just line graphs and circle graphs. Tomorrow we will do some practice on them.

The science tests were today. We did not have extra time to review before the test, but the students have had the majority of the information since Friday. They will get their vocabulary tomorrow for next week's information.

The heritage studies tests are tomorrow. We did not have time to review in class but we have gone over the entire study guide together already. We will try to have a couple of minutes to review before the test tomorrow.

Both grades had a math test today. We reviewed over their practice work before taking them.

We went over the science study guide for 6th grade today. 5th grade got their study guide today, but there is not much information other than the vocabulary that they have had since Friday. Some of the 5th graders finished in class.

Both grades got their heritage studies study guides today. A lot of the students were able to complete it in class.
